This Galleon was sailing from Callao, Chile, when she
encountered Pirates! The captain
intentionally ran aground and set the ship on fire on the Isle de
Muerto, Ecuador, to avoid stealing. Neither
pirates nor the returning Spaniards were able to recover all the treasure.
The Eight Reales offered here are from the recovery effort that
took place hundreds of years later. These Reales were
struck at the Potosi Mint and are of the Pillar and Waves Style.
These coins circulated widely throughout the world and are the

These Sassanian (the

The Sassanians, who revived the Archaemenid tradition and re-established

Maximinus II was made Caesar in the
Tetrarchy in 305 A.D. In 311, Maximinus took advantage of the death of
Galerius to invade and annex the latter's territory. In 313 A.D., he
invaded Licinius' territory, and although he seized many cities his army
was utterly destroyed in a battle on the 30th of April. He disguised
himself as a slave and fled, falling ill and dying in the city of Tarsus. |

after the death of his adopted father Trajan. Much of Hadrian's reign was
spent visiting provinces of his vast empire, through this he greatly
improved the defense of these areas. He is best known as the builder of
the Great Wall from Tyne to Solway. Much of this immense work can still be
seen today. With a firm but humane rule Hadrian is considered to be one of
the more capable emperors to ever occupy the throne and he devoted his
whole life to the improvement of the state. He died on July 10th 138 AD
after a long illness. |

This original ancient solid Silver Drachm, minted during the
dynasty of Azes II, Satrap of the Kingdom of Sakastan from 35 B.C. to 5
A.D., was a rare witness to the birth of Christianity. Historians believe
Azes II sent his representative to the Holy Land seeking proof of the
birth of the Christ Child. Called Gaspar or Caspar, he was one of the Magi
who gazed upon the baby jesus and offered gifts to the King of Kings.
Gaspar’s journey was financed by these Silver Drachmas. He is certain to

Alexander Jannaeus feature an anchor, "King Alexander" in Greek on the
obverse, while the reverse shows an eight pointed star surrounded by a
diadem and sometimes Hebrew lettering. Because these coins were struck in
large quantities and circulated for so long, they become the top candidate
for the Widow's Mite of Mark 12:41-44. These coins were crudely made and

Ptolemy VI Philometor was a king of Egypt During the Ptolemaic
period. He reigned from 180 to 145 BC starting at the age of 6 and ruled
jointly with his mother, Cleopatra I, until her death in 176 BC. In the
year 164 he was driven out of power by his brother and went to Rome to
seek support. Ptolemy received the needed support from Cato and was
restored the following year by the intervention of the Alexandrians. From
then on he ruled cruelly while suppressing frequent rebellions. Ptolemy VI
Philometer was killed in Syria while fighting against Alexander Balas. |

These beautiful little silver
coins from ancient Greece depict the head of the lovely nymph Histiaia.
These tetrobols, or literally "four obol", coins were struck in the
important commercial city of Histiaia, named after the nymph which was the
local city goddess. Histiaia was found on the Greek island of Euboia,
which lies just off the eastern mainland. The tetrobols weigh an average
of about 2.3 grams and probably traded in the market place as half a
drachma when worn.
The reverse depicts the same nymph as a full figure seated near the stern
of an Greek galley.
These coins were struck for 170 years and were obviously a very important
part of the small change used in Greece during that time. |

These tiny (about 3/4 gram), crudely made silver coins are from
ancient Phoenecia - Byblos, which is present day Sur, Lebanon. Struck from
400-333 BC, each shows a lion attacking a bull on the obverse, with a
galley filled with mercenaries above a sea serpent on the reverse. Byblos
later became part of the Roman empire and was famous for its papyrus. It
is believed the scriptures were written on papyrus from Byblos, hence the
word Bible came to be. |

The Gorgons were three powerful demons named Medousa (Medusa),
Sthenno and Euryale. Of the three sisters only Medousa was mortal. Some of
the most interesting Medusa coins are Apollonia Pontica drachms. These
coins were minted between 450-350 BC in the Greek colony of Apollonia
Pontica, which was situated along the Black Sea in Thrace.
Apollonia
Pontica drachms feature a striking image of Medusa, with a fierce stare
with its tongue sticking out.
These coins are also among the most
reasonably priced Medusa coins and with our limited supply now is the time

These nearly pure silver coins were recently unearthed after being
buried for nearly 2,500 years!
They were struck to finance the military payroll of the massive
Persian army some 1,700,000 strong. Each of these Sigloi averages about
5.5 grams and depicts King Xerxes as an archer in an action pose. Two
major obverse variations are found, one with a spear and bow, the other
with a dagger and bow. These were struck with a heavy sledge hammer on
thick oblong planchets. The reverse die was basically a rectangular lump
and the incused impression left has been found in many different
variations. These coins are frequently countermarked with tiny punches by
merchants or bankers, probably to attest to the quality of the silver.
Xerxes army attempted an invasion of Greece in 479 BC and although they
were able to capture Athens, they ultimately failed, being defeated at
Plataea. |

Miletus was the intellectual and commercial center of the Greek
world in the century before Athens rose to prominence. These tiny Milesian
silver pieces were issued about 500 B.C. and weigh roughly 1.12 g. On the
obverse they feature a lion—the Milesian city symbol—and on the reverse an
ornament variously described as a flower, sun, or star.
