Commemorative coins have been
popular since the days of the Greeks and the Romans.
The United States Commemorative Coin program began with the issue of the 1892
Columbian Exposition half dollar.
Others were struck intermittently thru 1954.
In 1982 the Mint started its "modern" commemorative program and now issues at
least two new designs each year.

The First United States Commemorative Coin!
These coins were sold for $1.00 each at the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago during 1893. The exposition was held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. Many of the coins went unsold and were placed in circulation at face value. The obverse shows a bust of Columbus while the reverse features Columbus' flag ship the Santa Maria with two hemispheres below. |
A Great Early Commemorative Coin! To commemorate the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth rock, Congress authorized these special half dollars on May 12th 1920. The obverse shows a portrait of Governor Bradford while the reverse features the Mayflower. The mintage of this commemorative was just 152,112 pieces, far less than today's issues. |

One of the more common U. S.
commemorative coins, the Stone Mountain half dollar was a by-product of a
much larger undertaking—the carving of monumental figures of Robert E.
Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Jefferson Davis into the side of a
sheer cliff. These heroes of the Southern Confederacy (only Lee and Jackson appear on the coin) were portrayed on horseback on a scale that would render them visible for miles. This great sculpture was not completed until more than fifty years after it commenced, and it left behind a legacy of strife and scandal which at one point brought all work to a halt. The coins that resulted from this visionary project possess a remarkable history of their own. |

Smith led the settlers through the struggles of a harsh winter, the spread of disease, and the often challenging relationships with the Algonquian Indians.
