Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of D-Day!
D-Day (June 6, 1944) was a
turning point of World War II.
The Allied forces under Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhower crossed the English Channel from England to France, surprising
the Germans and forcing them into retreat.
It was the greatest amphibious
landing in history, with 4,000 ships and landing craft ferrying 150,000
men and their equipment.
By July 1, about 1 million men had been landed in
the American and British zones.
From this point onwards, the Allies
had the advantage in the war and pressed onwards towards the liberation of
Paris in August and the fall of Nazi Germany – and the end of World War II
in Europe – in 1945.
This Walking
Liberty Silver Half Dollar was minted in 1944 and symbolizes the historic
D-Day invasion. |
